Derbyshire is in the dead centre of England with a fifteen-mile stretch of the M1 motorway threading its way from north to south. Looking down on the speeding traffic are the great Hardwick Hall, the ruins of Sutton Scarsdale Hall and the impressive Bolsover Castle, just three of the many haunted country houses dotted across Derbyshire’s spectral landscape. Spirits that occupy stately piles give us a taste of social history, but because ghosts can appear just about anywhere, other supernatural entities remain tantalisingly anonymous.
With so much paranormal activity to choose from, our task has been to select haunted places that are easily accessible and hauntings that are varied as well as spine-chilling. The number of paranormal books I have written is well into double figures, so it’s not surprising that people often ask me, ‘Have you seen a ghost?’ The answer has to be ‘yes and no’! It’s very rare for people to actually see a ghost; maybe a shadow caught in peripheral vision, but a full-blown manifestation tends to be the exception rather than the rule. I’ve sensed them, smelt them, felt them and heard them. With the advent of digital cameras, like many other people I’ve seen an amazing number of spirit manifestations in the form of orbs on my photographs.
It’s been theorised that orbs are spirit energy not normally visible to the human eye, which can be captured by increasingly sensitive cameras. In the pages that follow you will find a collection of stories from fifty of Derbyshire’s most haunted places.
Some of the stories are well known and have probably been embellished with the number of tellings, while others, which appear here for the first time in print, are my own experiences and those of honest, reliable and publicity-shy individuals. Some have occurred very recently and are still happening, so I hope you enjoy the book and take the opportunity to visit some of the sites – and if you encounter any form of apparition, do let us know.
Jill Armitage is a well known author of Ghost books; she lives in Derbyshire and has a long list of Ghost books to her name.
