In putting together this book of walks in and around the Black Country I have seen some of the most beautiful sections of countryside that I believe this country has to offer.
As a born and bred Black Countryman I have grown up with the canal network that criss-crosses our region, harking back to when the industrialised waterways were the safest and fastest mode of transport from the late 18th through to the mid-20th century, when road and rail offered far better alternatives. By the time I was growing up in the 1960s very few boats were still carrying freight along these waterways, which were falling into disrepair and decline. The waterways are now going through a renaissance as part of the leisure industry and many voluntary groups have been set up to maintain and preserve the canal heritage that you see today.
On many of these walks I have seen nature reclaim its hold on the post-industrial landscapes that exist throughout this region and turn man-made structures into glorious features which we can enjoy today.
Many of the walks are along canals and disused railway lines or around the remnants of mining and manufacturing industries. I have met many helpful and friendly people on these walks and have chatted and found out a little more about the locale from their interesting and intriguing stories. It is, however, not advisable to walk these routes alone. Apart from the usual health and safety issues these walks can take you through both urbanised and very remote areas so please be aware of personal safety at all times.
A big thank you goes to Mick, who helped me find the start point to my walk around Cannock Chase, and to my old mate Den, who took me around some of his old haunts with a few tales to tell!
I hope you enjoy your adventures in this book as much as I have. Best foot forward!
