Be frightened; be very frightened!
Did you know there are reports from passengers who were sitting and gazing into space only to look up and catch a glimpse of the reflection of another passenger sitting next to them, despite the seat being unoccupied?
Meanwhile, a witness spotted a woman in her twenties at King’s Cross underground station, kneeling at the side of the corridor with her arms outstretched, she appeared to be distressed and crying. There was nothing to suggest that she wasn’t human until someone walking in the opposite direction walked straight through her.
Hauntings are usually place-centred, and now the popular view is that they are triggered by drama and involve the ghosts of the dead. Add to this the numerous plague pits, graveyards and crypts that were disturbed during the building of the Underground and we have thousands of troubled souls none too pleased to have their eternal rest disturbed.
The unquiet spirit hypothesis remains a popular conjecture when dealing with visual apparitions, the sensation of a presence, anomalous noises, temperature variations, smells, object movements, doors opening and closing by themselves, and electrical anomalies. More recently other psychic suppositions have been offered as potential causes and it’s been suggested that such hauntings arise from vibrations set up by tides and underground water, electromagnetic energy released from tectonic plates, man-made electromagnetic radiation and infrasound.
Whether the phenomena are caused by the devil, the dead or complex geophysical theories, the London Underground qualifies on so many counts that it’s not surprising to find that it has more than its fair share of hauntings.
Ghost Stories of the London Underground is packed with these amazing stories, weird incidents and encounters that defy explanation, so come with us on a real-life ghost train experience through one of the most haunted underground systems in the world.
