Carefully researched and written in an impartial way, these accounts relate to the circumstances leading up to the murder and then detail the investigations that took place and the outcome of any resulting trial. There are some cases that remained unsolved, although the authorities may well have known the perpetrator but had insufficient evidence to take the matter to trial.
All of the true murder stories to be found in this book come form the Wessex area of England, which covers Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire
Even the most recent story from this collection is now over seventy years old, and yet these cases continue to fascinate us. For example, when I worked in Salisbury the story of Teddy Haskell was still talked about. As well as books written about the case there was even an excellent recreation of the murder trial staged in the Guildhall.
At the time of writing there is great interest in the closure of Dorchester Prison with the belief that there development will surely lead to the discovery of the body of Martha Brown. Martha’s story (the murder at Broadwindsor) is the earliest in this book and her execution was famously attended by Thomas Hardy. Of course it is the novels of Hardy that have done so much to establish the modern notion of Wessex.
The title of each of the chapters is taken from the newspaper reports of the time. Where the stories are particularly well known, such as that of Heath or Toplis,I have tried to reference the case against local landmarks that can still be seen today. You will also find other cases that may be less well known but still provide a fascinating insight into human nature.
